Former USGS building from DOGE’s canceled lease list is up for auction

The General Services Administration is auctioning off a Menlo Park property that once included the former office of a U.S. Geological Survey branch.

Bids start at $85 million.

GSA, landlord of many federal leases across the country, is putting the property at 345 Middlefield Rd. up for sale through a sealed-bid auction process, according to a webpage created for the property. That means early prospects will place competing bids unaware of each other’s offers.

The property is the former site of a U.S. Geological Survey office, a federal bureau responsible for monitoring and analyzing natural hazards.

USGS leased more than 300,000 square feet for a number of years until it started moving to its new location near NASA in Mountain View in 2019. Its lease was included in Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency’s growing list of lease cancellations.

The bidding process for the property will open to the public on April 15.

The 17-acre property is being marketed as a redevelopment site. It includes 17 buildings — all built between 1953 and 1995. Many of the buildings are offices and labs.

The site comes with a café, credit union and a childcare facility. While the first two are vacant, the childcare facility is still occupied by GeoKids, an early childhood development center open to the local community.

GeoKids’ lease expires on Aug. 31 and will be extended for another year, a GSA spokesperson said.
